Carissa’s Story – Speech-Language Pathologist
Our team of teletherapists helps children from all over the United States reach their full potential. They have different interests, come from backgrounds different from one another, and have landed in their careers for different reasons, but their impact remains the same – they can help children reach their full potential.
In the next few months, we’ll share interviews with a few of our SLP therapists to learn about how and why they got started in teletherapy and the motivation behind their career choices. This week, we asked Carissa about her experience as a teletherapist with VocoVision.
How did you choose a career as an SLP?
I have my undergraduate degree in Business Administration and Marketing. I wasn’t very happy working in that type of industry at the time. I decided to brainstorm what was missing from my career. I knew that I loved helping others and making a difference in someone’s life. I started volunteering at my local children’s hospital in the Speech-Pathology department. After that, I took my post-baccalaureate classes, and luckily got into the only graduate school I applied to!
How did you get started in teletherapy?
One of my friends from graduate school recommended it to me.
What do you love the most about teletherapy?
I love that I am able to reach so many people that normally would not have access to the services I can provide. I also love the convenience it has provided me since I am able to work from home. It has been an amazing experience!
What is your favorite part about your job?
My favorite part about my job is seeing the progress and success that my clients have been making. It is incredibly rewarding when someone has the “light bulb” moment, and the information starts to click.
What are some of your goals in teletherapy?
I would love the opportunity to mentor other SLPs that are working in teletherapy or looking to transition to it. In addition, moving into an SLP management role in the future.
